چکیده

Previous work on wound healing in holothurians (sea cucumbers) has been concerned with the relatively longterm cellular processes of wound closure and regeneration of new tissue. In this report, we characterize a short-term adhesion that is a very early step in holothurian wound healing. Dissected pieces of dermis from the sea cucumber Parastichopus parvimensis adhered to each other after only 2 h of contact, whether the cells in the tissues were intact or had been lysed. Lapshear tests showed that the breaking stresses of adhered tissues reached approximately 0.5 kPa after 24 h of contact. Furthermore, dermal allografts were incorporated into the live recipient individuals without any external pressures, sutures or artificial gels to keep them in place. Dislodging the grafts after 24 h of contact required shear stresses of approximately 14 kPa. It appears that the adhesive property of the dermis plays a key role in the initiation of this grafting.

Molecular and Morphological Characterization of Two Species of Sea Cucumber, Parastichopus parvimensis and Parastichopus californicus, in Monterey, CA

Parastichopus parvimensis and P. californicus, two ecologicallysimilar species of sea cucumber, are the only sea cucumber fisheries in California.1 Aside from the economic importance that this distinction affords them, the two also play an important ecological role as subtidal, benthic detritivores.1, 2 Though some ecological distinctions between the two species exist – P. californicus, notably...

Triterpenoid oligoglycosides from the sea cucumber Stichopus parvimensis.

Two new holostan-type triterpenoid oligoglycosides, named parvimosides A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the warty sea cucumber Stichopus parvimensis (syn. Parastichopus parvimensis). Their structures and total assignments of the proton and carbon signals were established on the basis of spectral evidence, mainly 1H and 13C 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy including DEPT, COSY, TOCSY, NOESY/ROESY, ...

Development of New Microsatellite DNA Markers from Apostichopus japonicus and Their Cross-Species Application in Parastichopus parvimensis and Pathallus mollis

Twenty microsatellite DNA markers were developed for sea cucumber and used to investigate polymorphisms of 60 wild Apostichopus japonicus individuals collected from China. It revealed that all the markers were polymorphic. A total of 164 alleles were detected at 20 loci. The number of alleles per locus varied from 3 to 17 with an average of 8.2, and the expected heterozygosities of each locus r...

Dynamic mechanical characterization of a mutable collagenous tissue: response of sea cucumber dermis to cell lysis and dermal extracts.

The dermis of the holothurian Cucumaria frondosa is a mutable collagenous tissue (MCT). In this study, the inner and outer regions of the dermis were separated and used to make two different tissue extracts. These extracts were applied to intact pieces of dermis, one invoking a stiff mechanical state and the other invoking a compliant state. The extracts were effective on tissues incubated in a...

Interfibrillar stiffening of echinoderm mutable collagenous tissue demonstrated at the nanoscale.

The mutable collagenous tissue (MCT) of echinoderms (e.g., sea cucumbers and starfish) is a remarkable example of a biological material that has the unique attribute, among collagenous tissues, of being able to rapidly change its stiffness and extensibility under neural control. However, the mechanisms of MCT have not been characterized at the nanoscale. Using synchrotron small-angle X-ray diff...
